Pukka Supreme Matcha Tea

Description

Although all teas originate from the same plant species, it is how they are cultivated and harvested that makes the difference. Matcha is organically grown on Jeju-Do, a stunning volcanic island off the coast of South Korea. Weeks before they are harvested the plants are covered in shade, which increases their production of chlorophyll and amino acids. This not only deepens the colour of the leaf, but also gives it a sweeter taste. A hi-tech tractor is then used to harvest only the most tender leaf tips. This method shortens the time between harvesting and processing, which, in turn, ensures that all of the highly nutritional properties of the leaf are retained. Leaves are then steamed to prevent oxidation, air-dried and sorted to ensure that their colour conforms to the required deep iridescent green. Only then are the leaves crushed to produce the super-concentrated, power-packed Matcha powder that easily dissolves in water.

To demonstrate their total belief in the health-boosting powers of Matcha, Pukka had its master herbsmith reformulate a number of their favourite green teas to include 2 per cent of the powder. This not only added nutritional gold to the popular brews, but with Matcha’s naturally bitter taste, also created the perfect flavour. They then went on to create several new flavour blends, including the Supreme Matcha Green, which is an infusion of three fairly traded whole leaf greens. It not only produced a super-powered green tea, but also one that helps to fund the WWF-sponsored ‘Living Himalayas’ initiative, set up to protect the region’s many endangered plant, animal and bird species and to promote sustainable living.
