Born To Run

Posted in Fitness By LiftYourWay

At LiftYourWay, we do occasionally include sport shoes in our range; invariably, when we have access to a particularly great deal for our clients. However, it’s important to be clear here: the jury is still out as to whether running shoes really can improve sporting performance, and in fact, the majority of published scientific evidence currently suggests that they do not.

Yesterday's BBC news headline read "obese patients face NHS surgery ban to save money" - but is it really as straightforward as this? Bariatric surgeon (presumably with a reputation to protect), Shaw Somers, oversimplies the issue with the comment that "to deny them [obese people] treatment that they need on the basis of their weight, without then offering them effective help to help them lose weight is rather like discriminating [against] a segment of the population on the basis of their colour or religious persuasion." Well, no, it's not. You wouldn't discriminate against somebody based on their colour or religion because skin colour and religion are not correlated with higher surgical risk or a greater demand for preoperative diagnostic testing.

In the following article, we discuss how restricting access to non-emergency surgery for particular patients is nothing new within the NHS. Within a context of finite (and ever-decreasing) resources, preservation of the most essential services must always be paramount.

Symptoms such as breathlessness, fainting and chest pain immediately evoke fears of coronary artery disease - or even that someone is having an acute coronary event (a 'heart attack'). However, if the source of the problem is indeed cardiac, it can in fact be something very different indeed.

Tanning Machine Wattage

A common question from clients is "how many watts is this tanning machine?" Our reply back is rarely a straightforward one, because wattage certainly does not tell the full story when it comes to tanning machine performance.

Spray tanning was once hailed as the quintesential recession-proof industry. No matter how bad the economy got, it was argued, people would always need life's little luxuries - and in a recession, maybe even more than ever.

The difference between those discussions and those of today are that the recession was an almost global event. Brexit, on the other hand, is specific to the United Kingdom - at least for now. So whilst our currency hits record-breaking lows, what does this mean for the spray tan industry? Just how reliant are we upon international trade?
