Weight lifting straps

Lifting straps are very useful tools for deadlifts and other resistance exercises where gravity is pulling away from you. Arguments about grip strength seem a little misplaced, given that one doesn't perform a deadlift to improve one's grip - and is it really sensible to hold off development of large muscles like glutes, hamstrings etc., just because these muscles happen to be able to perform more sets at a given weight than your hands are able to hold it for?
